This practical starting point helps small businesses collect the information a professional designer will need. Requirements can vary by product, claims, and sales channel—confirm your specific obligations with the relevant Jamaican authorities.
GENERAL LABEL CHECKLIST
Information to gather
Origin statement
If made locally, an exact phrase such as "Made in Jamaica", "Packed in Jamaica", "Product of Jamaica" (as applicable). If processed elsewhere, state that country's name instead.
Responsible business
Name and identifiable street address of the processor, manufacturer, packer, importer or distributor — conventionally introduced with "Manufactured by", "Packed by" or "Distributed by".
Net quantity
State the exact net contents (liquids by volume, solids by weight), in metric units, set apart from other label copy in bold, high-contrast type. Exaggerating terms like "jumbo" or "full gallon" are not permitted.
Ingredients
List every ingredient in decreasing order of proportion by weight or volume. Ingredients tied for the same proportion are listed alphabetically. State whether any percentage shown is by weight or volume.
Batch code and packing date
Every container needs a code identifying the processor, the place processed, and the date packed, for traceability.
Storage, use and safety
Add storage, handling or preparation instructions whenever the product needs special care, plus any relevant warnings or cautions.
Language
Label information must be in English, even when other languages are also shown.
Letter size (printer/designer step)
Minimum required letter height is tied to the real printed panel's area (from 1/16 in up to 1/2 in) — this can only be confirmed once real dimensions and a dieline exist, not from a concept image.
Food and beverage products
The Bureau of Standards Jamaica identifies JS CRS 5 for pre-packaged foods and JS 350 for pre-packaged goods. Product-specific standards may also apply—for example, the Bureau lists a standard for packaged natural coconut water. The Ministry of Health & Wellness states that registration, licensing, importation, sale, and distribution can also fall under the Food and Drugs framework.
